Flashers in the Ballpark

In a conversation with a friend at work we were talking about his trip to New York to watch a couple Yankees games. Derrick Jeter was going for the record breaking number of hits in Yankee Stadium and the flashbulbs were going off.

What I found funny is we were laughing about the fact that people have their flashes on. Nothing sounds too unusual at this point, huh? Think about it the flash lights up the immediate area not an image 100+ feet away. I never thought of it but the flashes make no difference at all. Now I don't claim to know much about photography but it seems like there would no advantage to the flash at this point. It probably effects the photo in a negative way, gives a false sense of the image being closer and actually lighting up the immediate area making the image actually darker than it would be with no flash.

Any pros out there that can straighten me out or is this a correct assumption.

I'm totally disappointed that this post isn't about nudity.
