Where's My Straw?

Have you ever wondered why when dining out and order a soda, ice tea or lemonade it arrives your table with a straw in it? Now this does not apply to all restaurants as I don't think I have seen this type of activity at a Daniel's Broiler or Icon but check it out in the local RR, Applebees and etc. I can bet most of the people that bring themselves to read this blog don't have straws "on-hand" and ready to go at home, do you? If it is an etiquette issue, then why not the finer restaurants and why not in your beer and wine as well? Also, notice how many of these same places will give you a straw with the above mentioned "straw-drinks" but do not with water. What is the deal? Is it for the waiter to sort out Coke versus root beer? Is it for the waiter to sort out diet versus regular? If so, then what about Sprite versus regular, doesn't appear to be straw worthy and quite easy to see what is what?

I'm thinking the next step is a straw with your peas and corn, that way the waiter can keep them sorted and you can just snort away!

Straws are for kid drinks. Order a kid drink, you get a straw. We have straws handy at home...the kind with the bend in the middle, it is great to be a kid!
