Nothing To Write Home About

I heard a comedian on the radio today that was talking about a response he had to a friend who ask how his date went. He replied, that she was nothing to write home about. Of course the friend was concerned more about what he wrote home about in describing a lovely lady.

That got me thinking about the comment "nothing to write home about". Makes sense to me except when you actually are at home and something happens? When asked "hey Mike how was the deadliest catch last night?" If I actually watched it at home, could I say, "well Jim, it was nothing to write home about"? Who would I be writing to, myself? my cat? I'm easily amused and confused. Am I writing home right now?
