Why do they call them apartments? They're all attached, wouldn't they really be separates? Clothing people talk about separates because the units are worn separately. Oh, you will never look at apartments the same, just why can't they be apart from each other and make my life easier?

Well maybe the person who looked at the 1st "apartment" said, "Wow, how can one person afford all that?!" So then, the name was changed to apartment so idiots out there would realize that multiple people could live in a massive building like that. Oh, or what if people think that it's a hotel?
and you know where "hotel" came from. Alot easier to spell and prounouce than prostitute house. Hope I didn't offend any prostitutes reading my blog :)
